Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970093101

I have long believed that legislation which addresses violations on an individual basis. and the use of a public forum to draw attention to these cases. legitimately serve not only our own interests but those of oppressed people around the world. In this vein. I am participating in todays Call to Conscience Congressional Vigil for Soviet Jewry and would like to bring to the attention of my colleagues the plight of Yuri Goldfand. Dr. Goldfand is a doctor of physics who along with his wife. Natalia. and his only child. would like to emigrate from the Soviet Union. The Goldfands visa application to leave Russia was originally denied in October 1974 and since that time Dr. Goldfand has been unable to find employment in his field. In November of 1979.
