When Carmellas mother took ill at an Israeli Independence party in Vilnius. doctors at a local hospital refused to treat her. claiming her illness was incurable. Less than 2 weeks later she was dead of a perforated ulcera death that Vladimir is convinced stemmed not from mere medical incompetence. but from a deliberate pattern of abuse and neglect. Vladimirs parents. who have continually supported the efforts of their sons family to emigrate. became unwilling objects of a propaganda campaign in. the Soviet press. Those reports frequently stated that Vladimirs father opposed his sons wish to emigratethat he hoped that his son would never leave. and be buried along side him within the USSR. Part of that grisly prediction has already come true. In July of 1980 Vladimirs father. already a gravely ill man who had been denied proper medical attention. collapsed and died.
