Mr. Speaker. this summer marks the seventh year that Turkish troops have occupied Cyprus. The presence of these troops has caused countless damage to the thousands of Greek inhabitants. Their socalled sovereign state continues to be hampered by the control of 40 percent of the land by the Turkish occupational force. When the Turkish army invaded Cyprus in 1974. they created 200.000 Greek refugees. The strain of resettling them has caused great economic hardship to the Cypriot Government. In addition the 40 percent of Cyprus that Turkey controls represents 70 percent of the economic wealth. With only 18 percent of the Cypriot population being Turkish this condition is wholly unjust.
