Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970060818

Mr. Speaker. as we mark the seventh anniversary of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. I am disheartened that this divided country is no closer to a solution to the problems confronting it than it was last year at this time. Turkey is still forcibly holding 40 percent of Cyprus at bay. Two hundred thousand Greek Cypriots remain homeless refugees. compelled by Turkish forces to relinquish most or all of their worldly possessions. On March 20. 1981. President Reagan stated that resolving the dispute in Cyprus would remain a priority of his administration. However. little progress has been made toward finding a fair settlement which could benefit all the people of Cyprus.
