Speaker. on June 10. 1981. the Foreign Affairs Committees Subcommittee on Europe and the Middle East. which I chair. held a hearing on U.S. policy toward the Soviet Union. Yugoslavia. and the countries of Eastern Europe. Ambassador Lawrence S. Eagleburger. Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs. was the witness at that hearing. The hearing covered a wide range of critical topics in this most important area of our foreign policy. Assistant Secretary Eagleburger has submitted written responses to some questions he was unable to answer during the hearing. One response which I thought would interest my colleagues concerns comparative yearly levels of Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union and recent trends. The information follows:
