Mr. President. June 15 marks the 41st anniversary of the brutal occupation by the Soviet Union of the three Baltic nations. This action was characterized byto that date unknownviolence. inhumanity. and the following year the forcible deportation of thousands of men and women to Siberia. These deportations took place under incredibly difficult conditions. Many of the deportees perished from exhaustion. hunger. winter cold. and beatings. We are unable to compile an accurate record or accounting of these events. and can only speculate on the true nature of these crimes against humanity. Mr. President. the subjugation of the Baltic nationsEstonia. Latvia. and Lithuaniahas continued to this day.
