Behind the tanks and helicopter gunships have come the KGB. the GRU. the MVD. and all the odious apparat of the Communist regime and the wreckage of the bodies and minds of their victims that mark the Soviet Unions contribution to Afghanistan. All war is terrible. but the guerrilla war in Afghanistan has become an exercise in applied and refined terror. Massacre and mutilation have become commonplace. None can know the number of the dead. but a tremendous number of Afghans have been driven from their villages and fields. 1.700.000 are overflowing the refugee camps in Pakistan. and their number is growing by over 150.000 a month. Many more are in Iran or still inside Afghanistan. The human cost of this war is staggering.
