He is a man who underwent 10 years of terrible suffering in demeaning Soviet prison camps because he would not give up his strong belief in the Jewish faith. It is because of Iosif Mendelevichs inner strength and determination not to give in to his Soviet captors that the world has become acutely aware of the tragic suffering inflicted upon other Jewish Prisoners of Conscience in the Soviet Union. The Russians will continue to attempt to get away with this violation of basic human rights if we turn our backs on what is happening to the many people like Iosif Mendelevich who are being illegally held in prison camps because of their religious beliefs and a desire to immigrate to Israel. The Soviets must be made to know that the free world is watching their actions in this regard and that their efforts to stifle individual freedom will not go unnoticed. Iosif Mendelevich.
