Session #97 · 1981–83

Speech #970013578

Wallenberg is the heroic Swedish diplomat who was instrumental in helping hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews to escape the Nazi death camps during the Second World War and whose whereabouts have been in question ever since. Without consideration for his own safety. Raoul Wallenberg. an agent of the Government of Sweden acting at the request of the American War Refugee Board. risked -his own life to bring hope and the promise of salvation to people who believed that they were doomed to the same fate as the 400.000 Hungarian Jews who had already been sent to their deaths. His actions stand as an outstanding example to all of us who would remain indifferent to the suffering and pain of others. Raoul Wallenberg disappeared in 1945 when the Soviets marched into Budapest.
