Doctors say he is suffering from osteoarthritisa disease resulting in degenerating discs in the lumbosacral spine area. In addition he is plagued by severe back and stomach pains. His mother. upon seeing her son for the first time after many months of incarceration claimed her son "looked like a prisoner from Aushwitz." At this time I join with many of my colleagues and those who respect freedom throughout the world in an appeal to the Soviet leadership to let Mr. Shcharansky emigrate to Israel and join his family and loved ones. His release would be welcomed by the United States as a friendly gesture on the part of the Soviet authorities.e
