I participated in a vigil at the Isaiah Wall of the United Nations on behalf of Soviet prisoner of conscience Iosef Mendelevich. today. I am delighted to be able to join my colleagues in the House. the Jewish community around the world. and all people concerned with human rights in celebrating his release on February 18. 1981. after 10 years of brutal incarceration in a Soviet labor camp. His arrival in Israel that same day marked the end of a long and determined struggle for freedom. Of the 12 Jews convicted at the infamous 1970 Leningrad trials of attempting to emigrate to Israel. Mr. Mendelevich is the last to be freed.
