Norman Lefkovits and his wife Sonya. closed the Columbiana business as 1981 began. It had been in continuous operation by members of the Lefkovits family since 1896. and was apparently the oldest business in Shelby County. Ala. The founding of the store antedates the memories of almost all living Shelby Countians. Max Lefkovits. who immigrated from Hungary. was first involved in the Columbiana Mercantile Co.-located across the street from where the Leader now standswhich opened in 1907. The store in its early days had furniture. mens overalls. piece goods. and notions. some groceries. and just about anything else one might need. People would trade chickens or eggs from their farm for clothes.
