Ethiopia. and Ugandahave nomadic peoples whose normal source of food is cattlemilk and meat. As drought persists. milk supplies will disappear and cattle are slaughtered. The net result of this creates additional demand for grain in those countries. causing the grain shortfall to expand. Moreover. political conflicts in the area have created large refugee communities which strain the resources of the countries which harbor them. The SomaliEthiopian war has currently left Somalia with over 1.5 million refugees. about 40 percent of their original population of 3.7 million. This war also disrupted food production in both countries. There is little prospect for improvement over the next few months.
