Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960255253

If we are changing that policy. should we not do it in a kind of * phased. transitional way. in which we do not simply slam the door on one afternoon in the U.S. Senate? Whether we change it at all is a matter of some discussion and debate. But if we are going to change it. it seems to me that we have to allow some period of time. All I am suggesting is that we have the Select Commission on Immigration and Refugee Policy. which is going to have a considered opinion. backed up by 12 public hearings. Is that not the way in which we should proceed. and not a single. quick decision after a few hours of conversation?
