Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960253455

Today. we can take a small step to right this wrong to correct these situations. I urge support for the amendments. The amendments would first rescind $100 million in GSA furniture purchasing authority for 1980. Second. it would increase by $42 million U.S. foodforpeace commitment to nations with large refugee populations. My amendments will also increase the purchases of surplus grain from the American farmer to offset the surplus caused by the grain embargo. Today there are 78 warehouses in Washington filled with excess furniture. and although OMB has imposed a freeze on the new acquisitions by Federal agencies. a little over $100 million remains at the agencys disposal.
