Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960245616

Chairman. I support the gentle mans amendment strongly. A number c us yesterday sat in on hearings. oversigh hearings. on the subject of the emigre.. the refugees. whatever you want to cal them. from Cuba. One of the questions asked the responsible officials of our Gov ernment who are supposedly handlin this problem was: "To what extent ha there been some success in having othe countries participate in receiving thesi people. in having some of them resettle( some place besides the United States? I was assured that great steps wer. being made. But when I pinned it dowi to how many of these refugees. emigres have left the United States and gonq elsewhere. I finally got the answer tha 28 of them had agreed to go to Argentina. but none have gone anywhere. The3 all remain within the United States. Thf fact that 28 had agreed to go to Argentina did not mean that Argentina hac agreed to accept the 28. So as of yesterday morning at 7 oclock we had 104.000 plus several hundred 01 these socalled refugees in the United States. None have left. I hope and pray the gentlemans amendment will do some good.
