Speech #960224576

Her efforts on their behalf have taken her to some of the most remote areas of the Soviet Union. wherever refuseniks have been imprisoned. In 1978 Mrs. Nudel was herself tried and convicted of "malicious hooliganism" for hanging a banner outside of her Moscow apartment balcony saying simply "KGB give me my visa." Today. still serving her sentence in exile in Siberia. her life may be in real danger. On February 28. a local newspaper printed hostile statements toward her and the local police appear unwilling to provide the protection that she may need. Those of use who feel strongly about human rights should not forget Ida Nudel or the many other Jewish men and women in the Soviet Union who are harassed and persecuted.
