Speech #960223192

Before we can understand the meaning of this commemorative day. we must acknowldge the past. The first genocide of this century began in 1915 when prominent Armenians. scholars. and artists were arrested and eliminated. Men were assembled and shot in cold blood. Those that remained were deported on foot from their historical homeland without provisions and left helpless to die of starvation. exposure and mental fatigue. Families were destroved and scattered all over the world. By 1918 the Turks succeeded in killing half of the Armenian race.
