Speech #960218146

Similarly. with the continuing friendship of Turkey. with its highly strategic location. and still willing to work with us in spite of all its own monumental political and economic problems. Finally. I believe all of us were deeply impressed and moved by the Afghan rebel refugees we met and talked with in the refugee camps in Pakistan. just east of the famous Khyber Pass. While they have little more than the clothes on their backs. these brave freedom fighters plead with us to give them armsweapons of any kindso that they can go back across the pass and fight some more against the Soviet invaders of their homeland. With all our sophisticated and highly expensive programs of arms assistance around the world. here is one plain. simple. direct. and manifestly inexpensive way to help stop Russian aggression dead in its tracks.
