Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960218146

Saudi Arabia. Kuwait. and Turkey. Our group spent a halfday with the Coral Sea while it conducted demonstration air operations. and in Pakistan. before paying a visit to the famous and historic Khyber Pass. where we looked across into Afghanistan. we met with hundreds of Afghanistan rebels now in refugee camps in the Peshawar area. The visit presented to meand I believe to other members of our group as wella deeply disturbing picture of the future of the United States as a world power. especially in any continuing competition with the Soviet Union in that part of the world. There is no question but that the United States has suffered an enormous loss of prestige and influence as a result of our obvious impotence in resolving the Iranian hostage situation.
