Session #96 · 1979–81

Speech #960216226

The Egyptians Illtreated us. afflicted us. and laid heavy bondage upon us. And we are reminded of the Prisoners of Conscience. the Jews who languish in prison camps. subjected to poor diets and strenuous work. minimal medical attention and harassment from guards. even their twiceyearly visitation rights are often denied or delayed. The Passover story relates how the children of Israel "cried unto the Eternal. the Gd of our fathers. and the Eternal heard our voice. saw our affliction. our sorrow. and our oppression." And we recall the Jews of the Soviet Union crying out. demonstrating in Red Square. hanging banners pleading for exit visas. meeting with Western journalists. activists. tourists. and diplomats. while risking imprisonment. internal exile. conscription into the army. expulsion from school. and dismissal from work. On Passover. Jews sing: If Gd had brought us out of Egypt. that would have been enough for us.
