Guberman. a 44yearold Jewish activist. was arrested on August 13. 1979. after refusing to collaborate with the KGB. He was expected to go on trial In December 1978. Guberman had applied to emigrate to Israel. Soon after he submitted this application. Guberman was approached by the KGB agents who wanted him to "keep an eye on emigrating Jews and to denounce and prepare provocations against Jewish activists." Refusing. the KGB proceeded to punish Guberman by having him arrested on August 13. 1979. He was falsely charged with the illegal purchasing and selling of icons. for he had been collecting medieval relics for many years. which is not forbidden by Soviet law. Guberman has been actively involved in the Jewish movement there within the Soviet Union for several years.
