He is standing trial today. Thus. Guberman is not only denied the right of free emigration. But. and this is far more important. he is denied the right of fair trial. Guberman is not an exceptional case. There are hundreds of people in the Soviet Union who are undergoing the same experience as he does. But his case is particularly discouraging for all those whose only hope it is to emigrate one day and to leave all repression behind. There is not much we can do about this. But what we can do is strongly and continuously protest the Soviets noncompliance with international human rights standards.
