Public assembly was banned. censorship imposed. and the Estonian Government was dissolved. The new government took its orders from Moscow. In August 1940. Estonia was incorporated into the Soviet Union. After two decades of self rule. Estonia was once again forced to relinquish its national sovereignty. The people of Estonia have suffered many human and material losses since the start of the Soviet occupation. Tens of thousands of Estonians from all walks of life have been deported to remote areas of the Soviet Union. In the past. it has been reported. Estonians simply disappeared. or were liquidated by secret execution squads.
