Ukrainians. who constitute the largest nonRussian nation both within the U.S.S.R. and in Eastern Europe. won their independence on January 22. 1918. But the Ukrainian National Republic was soon destroyed by the invading Red Russian Army in one of the same substantial scenarios of subversion. fomented civil war. inviting invasion. "liberation" and "protection." executions and purges. and quisling setups preceding the captivity of a nation to Moscows domination and influence. During the years of Soviet rule. the people of Ukraine have endured manmade famines. deportations. and outright executions and they have stood by their religious beliefs despite ruthless destruction of their churches and despite efforts to incorporate the faithful into the Kremlincontrolled Russian Orthodox Church. The sweet taste of independence and freedom was short lived and long ago for the people of Ukraine. and so it is all the more important to demonstrate to the people of that brave nation that they and their struggle fof human rights are always in the minds of the people of the free world. We know that the Soviets sow the seeds of their own destruction because the will for freedom flourishes under oppression like a fire fanned by the thoughts and prayers of those in the free world who continue to stand by a proud people in their quest for liberty.
