We have a clear responsibility. to the courageous individuals who have chosen to defend their rights against great odds. to protest and take appropriate actions so as to insure that all people have opportunity to enjoy their human rights. On this occasion of Shcharanskys birthday. we must take special note of the plight of so many Soviet Jews. Shdharansky attempted to emigrate to Israel.* unable to tolerate the persecution. harassment and obstacles to pursuing his professional goals. Furthermore. he sought to improve Soviet human rights policies. as an active member of the Helsinki Watch Group. For these socalled criminal acts he was arrested and unconscionably sentenced to 13 years of imprisonment.
