Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940045424

It is not going to stop the President from doing what this bill intends to do. I would call to the attention of the members of the committee that some years ago in the State of Florida. which just happened to be the closest place to Cuba. Cuban refugees arrived in great numbers. they impacted their housing. ifipacted jobs. impacted welfare. I believe that this body and the people of the United States have a right to know what it is going to cost us. at least an estimate of what it is going to cost us to handle the refugees. I think the State of California has the right to know whether or not these individuals are going to remain in our State. Just tonight we have had a. report--and this is another one of those alleged reports that was on televisionthat Clark Field could handle no more refugees. that the government of Guam was expecting now approximately 141.000. If that figure is not exaggerated. that will multiply the population of Guam by three times. The next stop is California. and I do not believe that anyone in this chamber feels that the State of California should assume the responsibility for all of these people.
