Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940041382

Mr. President. this month we commemorate the 60th anniversary of one of the darkest and most shameful chapters in the history of Man. For it was on April 24. 1915. that the Turks began the systematic deportations. forced marches. and long series of unspeakable atrocities and massacres that culminated in the deaths of 11/2 million Armenian martyrs. These heinous and foul crimes can only be described properly as genocidethe bestial annihilation of one race of human beings by fellow human beings. Nearly as reprehensible was the indifferent attitude of other peoples who watched the massacres but did not so much as raise their voices in protest.
