Speech #940036774

Many parents send their children to orphanages because they know the children will be treated better there. not in order to abandon them. The motives of the administration are also open to question. An article In the Waqhington Post of April 7 revealed that--: Ambassador Graham Martin stressed that this evacuation along with the millions of refugees abandoning Communistcontrolled zones. will help create a sbift in Xmerican public opinion in favor of the Republic of Vietnam He felt that when these children land in the United States. they will be subject to television. radio. and press agency coverage and the effect will be tremendous. . I was also alarmed- to learn that the Private relief agencies which have Worked in Indochina have expressed serious misgivings about the wisdom of the current airlift. according to an article in the New York Times of April 5: 943 A private meeting of relief officials was called yesterday by the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Servicean umbrella organization for 42 religious and civic groups working in Indochinaand was held at the councils headquarters at 300 Park Avenue South.
