Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940007358

Mr. President. I urge enactment of legislation making it illegal for an employer to knowingly employ illegal alienls. This would seem to be necessary to cut off the job market for such aliens. Such legislation must be very carefully drawn to protect those who hire illegal aliens in good faith. Today. many of the latter are provided with false or stolen work certificates. phony marriage licenses and so forth. all making it difficult for the employer to detect the illegal alien. I would hope that this combination of additional funding for the Service and legislation drying up the job markets would make the message very clear to those who seek to enter our country illegally: You will not be able to find jobs in America. and if you enter illegally you will be detected in short order and returned to your own land. Even more important. these policies would demonstrate to unemployed American citizens that more jobs will be available to them. and unemployment will not in part be due to jobs being held by those who enter our country illegally.
