Session #94 · 1975–77

Speech #940007358

About 45 percent of the present class are such veterans. I would hope this number could be increased. under the provisions of the Vietnam Era Veterans Readjustment and Assistance Act of 1974. The Service is also requesting additional funds for a type of census to establish more precise figures as to how many illegal aliens are in this country. and holdIng jobs. This. too. would seem eminently justified. Finally. the Service is requesting additional funds for interior and repatriation operations. Today the problem is not simply stopping illegal entries. although this is difficult enough. The Service must find the illegal aliens who have "disappeared" in cities all over America. A large number of its additional staff will be assigned to this task. February 7. 1975 COls Once illegal aliens are located. they must be returned to their native land. If the alien has no funds. the cost of transportation must be borne by the Service. Each regional office has a limited allocation of funds for this purpose. and if such funds are exhausted. the Immigration Service has no recourse but to turn such aliens loose. with orders to report to the regional office. Naturally. they simply go underground again. The Service cannot afford to hold them in detention indefinitely.
