Speech #930355638

The settlement of our problems in the Middle East can be more readily achieved if we can develop the cooperation of the Soviet Union as a friendly trading partner with some interest in our domestic success and prosperity. Finally. Mr. Speaker. the trade bill is unprecedented in the annals of American economic legislation since it requires for the first time some humane considerations. some regard for the liberty and happiness of people. while it seeks to achieve the goals of economic interchange. The freedom of emigration amendment is a good precedent. It is my hope that every American law will include some similar type of hallmark as we legislate for business and industry. There is wisdom in also legislating for human decency and for the respect of the individual.
