The policy pursued by this Government has resulted in the intrusion of Turkish troops on Cyprus and has led to the present situation. with 40 percent of the island occupied by Turkish troops and with 200.000 refugees. Let me address myself briefly to some of the consequences of the policy pursued by our State Department during the Cyprus crisis. First. NATO has been plunged into its worst internal crisis since its creation 25 years ago and the Western security system in the Eastern Mediterranean has collapsed. The likelihood of conflict between Greece and Turkey. two NATO allies. has been greatly increased.
