Session #93 · 1973–75

Speech #930223544

Mr. Speaker. this morning I had the privilege to testify before the Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments of the Senate Judiciary Committee regarding a resolution which I have introduced to enable naturalized citizens to hold the office of President of the United States. I was accompanied by two young people from Joyce Junior High School in Woburn. Mass. They were representing their classmates who had first written to me 2 years ago to raise the problem created by the language in article II. section I. clause 5 of the Constitution which provides that only "natural born" citizens shall be eligible to hold the Office of President.
