The present Communist domination is not the first time Lithuania has suffered under the Russian yoke. From 1795 to 1918. Tsarist Russia controlled all of Lithuania and followed many of the policies the Communists do today. They replaced Lithuanians in high posts of the government with their own people and banned higher education. which had existed in Lithuania since the 1500s. As during the WW II occupation. many Lithuanians during the 1800s emigrated from their homeland. Most of them came to the United States. Some returned to their mother country to preach of the freedom they had found in this country and others sent books which had been banned in Lithuania back to relatives.
