There is no question but that Allende was a Marxist. a Communist. but the fact is that the Allende government was democratically elected. had a parliament made up of a majority of his opponents who were not Marxist or Communist. and there was a free press. It was a democratic government with an independent parliament and judiciary. Today. as a result of the military juntas activities. there are hundreds of people in jail. if not thousands. There are hundreds of people who have taken refuge in the various embassies. Indeed. the Swedish Ambassador was just expelled from the country because he was the only Ambassador to physically defend the refugees who had received his protection under international law and who. had they been picked up by the junta. would have been slaughtered. He stopped them at the gate. Why do I tell the Members this?
