The horrors of World War II then swept across these lands. The Nazi armies conquered the area and then the Red army returned. Ever since. these countries have been held under the rule of the Soviet Union. Immigrants and refugees from Latvia and the other Baltic States have contributed immeasureably to the diversity and growth. to the interest and beauty of our own land. It is right that we all should join with them in this remembrance and anniversary. But Latvia must also be remembered for its lesson. for its meaning to the cause of freedom and liberty for all men. everywhere.
