A native of India. Dr. Saund came to the United States in 1920 to continue his studies at the University of California at Berkeley where he earned M.A. and Ph. D. degrees in mathematics. However. his efforts to teach were thwarted because U.S. law at that time prohibited him from becoming a naturalized citizen. He then turned his energies to farming. In 1942. however. Dr. Saund helped to organize the India Association of America. Because of his initiative and leadership in this association. efforts to amend the Federal law prohibiting citizenship for all persons born in Asia were finally successful in 1946.
