In October. 1971. after Nixon nominated Mrs. Romana Banuelos to be Treasurer of the United States. but before she had been confirmed. U.S. immigration agents raided her Mexican foodpackaging plant in California and seized thirtysix Mexican workers as illegal aliens. It developed that the firm had been raided six times in four years for the same reason. Someone had called the communications director before the story brokepresumably it was a pr. man for the Immigration Serviceand the White House had a few hours notice. Klein said. "I cant tell you." Klein added. "how Important that is---to have some forewarning." To commemorate the year 1971. Kleins office distributed to the press an amazing thirtyfourpage. singlespaced mimeographed document entitled "Richard Nixons Third Year." "In the year now ending." Kleins encomium began.
