Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920311951

Who can seriously say that the gun laws of 1968 deterred the commission of crime in any way? The year 1968 was an eventful year. In April. Martin Luther King was killed by an assassin who used a highpowered rifle. The Congress reacted by passing a bill which made it unlawful for a convicted felon. a mental incompetent or an illegal alien to possess a handgun. Two months later Robert Kennedy died at the hands of a killer wielding a handgun. Congress responded again by passing a bill to restrict the sale and ownership of rifles and other long guns.
