Mr. Speaker. House Resolution 1055 provides an open rule with 1 hour of general debate for consideration of H.R. 440. the purpose of which is to extend to customs and immigrant inspectors the same retirement benefits accorded to law enforcement personnel under the hazardous duty provisions of the civil service retirement law. Employees serving in hazardous positions are granted the privilege of retiring at age 50 with 20 years of service at 2 percent of the high 3year average salary for each year of service. The retirement must be recommended by the head of the employing agency and his recommendation must be approved by the Civil Service Commission. Positions granted the preferential retirement have been in the field of law enforcement. H.R. 440 would extend the hazardous occupation provisions to customs and Immigration inspectors. No customs or immigrant inspectors who had not in fact been exposed to hazards over a 20year period would be eligible for such preferential consideration. It is estimated that additional cost to the Government will be $3.2 million in each of the next 30 years. Mr.
