Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920252096

Present law permits child labor in agriculture during nonschool hours in the district where the child lives while employed. Thus. in Oregons Willamette Valley in 1970 it was possible for 75 percent of the strawberry field force to be composed of children under age 14. The committee discovered to its shock and consternation that a 6yearold child of one migrant family worked in the fields for 15 hours per day. 7 days per week. in 100 degree heat. for 23 cents an hour. All Members of this body are also familiar with the countless examples of injury to young children employed in agriculture. Again.
