I have only just seen this amendment. about 10 minutes ago. Inherently. I do not like to vote on amendments until I know what they contain or which have not been printed. However. I can say to the Senator from Massachusetts that I am certainly in sympathy with the purposes of his amendment. I believe that we do have a responsibility in South Vietnam. just as we had in North Vietnam in the 1950s when. to meet that responsibility we helped transport 900.000 refugees to the south. which literally saved their lives. We did that after the Bishop of Danang had estimated that 500.000 people had been killed. Personally.
