Speech #920248615

Mr. Speaker. as my colleagues who have preceded me in outlining the history of the Japanese in this country have indicated. most of the early immigrants located themselves on the west coast and in the intermountain States. Those involved in developing trade relations between Japan and the United States understandably located themselves not only on the Pacific Coast but also in New York and New England. as well as Philadelphia. Not many chose to live in the midwest. After the 1942 wartime military evacuation of Japanese Americans from the west coast States and after the War Relocation Authority developed a procedure under which many of these evacuees could leave the centers on work leave. however. thousands of Americans of Japanese origin relocated to the many cities in this area.
