Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920231994

I was astonished because Senator McGOVERN has so frequently addressed himself to the crisis in the Middle East in so specific and forthright a manner as to leave no reason whatsoever for misunderstanding. On May 30. 1972. in Los Angeles. Senator MCGOVERN again reiterated his stand. outlining a fourpoint program aimed at "guaranteeing the survival of an Israel that is economically sound. politically democratic. and militarily secure." His fourpoint program included a firm and continuing commitment for supplies of American arms to Israel. an $85 million aid program to assist in resettling immigrants from the Soviet Union. U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. and American efforts to persuade the Soviet Union on the merits of a nonimposed Middle East settlement. I wholeheartedly support the McGovern program.
