Israel believes in and wants a permanent peace. but many of her neighbors apparently do not. As a result. the cost of maintaining a strong defense through equipment and manpower has greatly affected the Israeli economy. Still another enormous burden on the people and the economy of Israel is the vast migration of Soviet Jews to their national homeland. In 1971 more than 15.000 Jews immigrated to Israel. as a result of cruel and unjust treatment by the Soviet Government. This figure is expected to reach more than 35.000 for 1972. Israel is a necessary and vital hope for the Soviet Jews. but this influx is surpassing her capacity to meet their needs.
