Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920196706

Women can be. and are. sentenced to far harsher prison terms for an offense which would earn a much lighter sentence if committed by a man. Many of the laws which "protect" women did. in fact. perform that necessary function 50. 60. or 70 years ago when the sweatshop and the blatant exploitation of women and children were a reality. Tens of thousands of those women were immigrants. newly arrived in this country. unfamiliar with our laws. and desperate for income to support themselves and their families. Unions were in their infant stage. almost impotent. Wages and hours legislation had not been enacted for all our people.
