Session #92 · 1971–73

Speech #920194518

Mr. Chairman. there are a number of Italians wishing to emigrate to this country so that they may be reunited with family and friends. There is an estimated backlog of 22.000 Italian immigration requests. This huge backlog is the result of previous discrimination against Italian immigration under the WalterMcCarran Act of 1952 and earlier immigration laws. We have before the House a bill. H.R. 9615. which would. once and for all. correct the inequities against Italian immigration as well as some other immigration problems. It would extend a relatively small number of special immigration visas for brothers and sisters of American citizens for a short period of time. We are faced today with attempts to. limit the effectiveness of H.R. 9615. In particular the Dennis amendment would permanently bar the married brothers and sisters of American citizens.
