Only when we keep these facts in mind. do we really understand why they leaped at the chance for freedom in 1918. even if it meant living on the edge of the knife. always in danger of attack from the great powers to the west and to the east. This explains as well why these proud. tough Baltic peoples are among the most passionately patriotic of all the immigrants who have enriched our land. They have carried that fierce desire for freedom in their minds. in their hearts. in their very bones for century upon century. And when they find freedom. it is second in their scale of values only to their deeply held religious beliefs.
