James L. Hennessy. Executive Assistant to the Cornmissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service had retired from Government service. Jim Hennessy was no less than outstanding throughout his career with the Immigration and Naturalization Service which began in May 1941 at Boston. Mass. His intelligence. perception. inexhaustible knowledge of law. his candor. his understanding. and his reasonableness insured that whatever he did was done with perfection. In the immigration field. Jim Hennessy stood very tall and he cast a wide shadow that permeated every enactment of law in the field since he became Executive Assistant on August 1. 1954. Yet. Jim Hennessy continuously maintained a low profile. he was a man of few words. but you could be assured that his words were precise. well thought out. and to the point. Jim Hennessy appeared before the Subcommittee on Immigration and Nationality. Committee on the Judiciary. on numerous occasions over the years. He was always wel -med to the subcommittee as the true expert on immigration matters. In fact. whenever a complex question arose in the immigration field. the cry was always "call Hennessy" and immediately he would give you an answer. Jim Hennessy is one of those unique persons with such outstanding ability that others always seek his counsel. Jim needs no one to advance his cause or promote his career.
